Importance of Changing Catheter Bags
It is tempting to just keep using the same catheter bag over and over, but eventually the urine will break down the material and either cause a leak or will begin to have a noticeable odor. You will need to have additional catheter bags handy to replace these used catheter bags, and there are recommended times for changing catheter bags as well.
Generally, with a continuous closed system a catheter bag can go up to a month without needing to be changed. Usually when the catheter is changed is also the time to replace the catheter bag. This will be more frequent if the bag is damaged or leaking, or if the contents cannot be easily seen due to discoloration or sediment.
When one is switching from a leg bag to a large drainage bag, such as those mounted on beds, or vice versa, swapping out for a new catheter bag is called for. Anytime the drainage bag is disconnected from the catheter should also have a new catheter bag used. The goal is to prevent any infection from occurring and new catheter bags will be a big benefit.
